Honoring Hispanic Heritage Month
From September 15 to October 15, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to honor the history, culture, and impact of Hispanic and Latino communities. At The Honorable Plant, we’re proud to be part of Highlands, a town shaped by many cultures, including a strong Hispanic presence that continues to enrich our community.
Roots of Cannabis in Hispanic Culture
Cannabis first arrived in the Americas with Spanish colonizers in the 1500s, originally grown as hemp for textiles and rope. Over the centuries, Hispanic communities made it their own, weaving the plant into folk remedies, spiritual practices, and family traditions. Many families still remember “abuelita’s magic alcohol,” a cannabis-infused remedy used for aches and pains, a reminder of how long this plant has been tied to healing and culture.
From Stigma to Strength
In the 20th century, cannabis unfairly became associated with negative stereotypes about Mexican immigrants, fueling prohibition in the U.S. Yet despite stigma and systemic barriers, Hispanic activists and entrepreneurs have continued to push for representation and equity in today’s cannabis industry. Their work is helping shape a more inclusive future, one we’re proud to support.
Celebrating Here at Home
Highlands has its own way to celebrate Hispanic heritage. A local favorite Chilangos Mexican Grill, brings authentic flavors to our community and reminds us how Hispanic culture continues to shape and enrich our town. At The Honorable Plant, we’re proud to honor those same values of tradition, resilience, and community as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
